Beatty Selected to Participate in White House Business Forum

Otto Beatty III, co-owner of E.E. Ward Moving & Storage Co. LLC, was selected by Mayor Michael Coleman to represent the city at the White House Business Council and Business Forward forum on February 7, 2012. Business Forward has been facilitating a national discussion among business leaders to solicit input and perspectives from business and civic leaders on employment, the economy and job creation. Senior Obama Administration officials will provide an overview of current efforts to spur economic growth and Administration priorities. The forum will cover a range of topics as they relate to the Columbus business community and the economy, among them: innovation and open government; access to capital; health care; energy; education; immigration, and innovation.

Their hard work paid off, as their customers' positive reviews influenced the Columbus movers rack up of awards from Angie's List and Columbus Business First. E.E. Ward was also nominated for a Small Business Leader Award by the Columbus Chamber of Commerce.

The Angie's List Super Service Award is given to companies that maintain an "A" rating from their clients, earn a minimum number of reports during the Reporting Period and abide by the Angie's List operational guidelines. Plan on scheduling your free moving quote about 4 to 6 weeks before your move, especially if you’re planning a move to a different state.

On November 15th, E.E. Ward celebrated their fantastic employees. After receiving a free flu shot, employees were treated to a fresh, hot meal catered by Ollie’s Trolley from Cincinnati. Chris King Accepted Into The AMSA Leaders Program

Chris King, Operations Manager at E.E. Ward, has been selected for the American Moving & Storage Association Leaders Program.

The mission statement of the program is:

“To support the professional moving and storage industry businesses and to

sustain productivity and to encourage growth on both a professional and personal level.”

During this intense five month training program, Chris will learn the latest practical techniques and tools to reach his leadership potential. The first half of the program focuses on the leadership and management skill of decision making. The second half will emphasize on other aspects of leadership including visioning, modeling, communications, and motivation.

The program will come to a close in February 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada where Chris will receive his certificate of completion.

E.E. Ward Owners Receive Six Sigma Certification

The week of October 17th, Brian Brooks and Otto Beatty completed Six Sigma Black Belt training. The two day training course was given by the International Society for Six Sigma Certification and was hosted at Franklin University.

Six Sigma is a highly disciplined process that focuses on developing and delivering near-perfect products and services consistently. It is also a management strategy to use statistical tools and project work to achieve breakthrough profitability and quantum gains in quality. Our goal at E.E. Ward is to integrate Six Sigma into our everyday business to provide the highest quality of service for our customers.

E.E. Ward Wins a Columbus Fast Fifty Award

The Fast 50 Awards is a program that recognizes the fifty fastest growing companies in Central Ohio. The annual event is hosted by Columbus Business First and is celebrating their 16^th anniversary this year. The award ceremony was held on October 12^th.

To be eligible for the award, a company must be headquartered in the Central Ohio area, privately held, and have had an average of one million dollars in revenue per year with a three year operating history.

This is the first year E.E. Ward has been presented with this award. We are happy to announce we ranked 27^th out of 50! We are very proud of our company and we thank our customers. How to Cope With Moving Stress

Moving can be stressful. At E.E. Ward Moving and Storage, we want your move to be an effortless and relaxed experience. Our friends at 1-800-Pack-Rat sent us over some tips to deal with the stress of moving. So sit back, relax, and enjoy!

1) Take care of yourself. Even though you think you don't have enough hours in the day to do everything, make sure you're still eating right, getting enough sleep, and exercising, even if you only take a quick, daily walk.

2) Remember that these feelings are temporary. You'll find a new "normal."

3) Get excited about your new location. Contact the local Chamber of Commerce for literature and maps of your new area. Choose some interesting things to see and do, after you move, so you'll have something enjoyable to look forward to.

4) Set aside time for R&R. Even if you're moving on short notice, don't work non-stop at preparing for your move. Rent a movie one evening, or take the kids to the playground. You'll accomplish more if you have time to rest and relax, so you're not physically and mentally frazzled.

Our saleswoman, Abby Phillips, has one more tip to deal with the stress of moving. It's "best to not take on more than you can handle. Allow the 'experts' (the moving company) to handle packing specialty items (breakables, china, odd shaped lamps) since they have the perfect boxes to do so. This will also save you time and money by not running around to 2 or 3 different stores looking for packing materials."

Originally from Ohio, Debbie’s first job in the moving industry was at the young age of fourteen! Debbie’s mother use to provide packing services for a moving agent in Cincinnati, and Debbie helped her mother in her free time.

Over the last few years, Debbie has worked in Port Richey, Florida and Fredrick, Maryland in the relocation industry. More recently, she moved back to Ohio so she could be closer to her family. She is the proud mother of two and grandmother of four. Outside of her career, Debbie enjoys spending time with her grandkids, sewing, and cooking.

Your Moving Checklist

Whether you hired movers or you’re moving yourself, the to-do-list can seem overwhelming. Our friends over at 1-800-Pack-Rat sent us a checklist of things to do in the months leading up to your move. Print this list off and put it on your fridge so you can read over it every now and then to make sure you don’t forget anything!

Moving Checklist

At least 3 months before moving day:
• Schedule your date with a moving company.

• Go through the basement, attic, shed, and garage. Have a yard sale for things you don't need or want to take. Note: if you donate items to a charity, ask for a tax receipt.

• Talk to the vet for tips on traveling with your pets. Ask about shots or paperwork they may need.

• Start a file for moving receipts.

2 months before moving day:
• Did you know you can now change your address with the U.S. Postal Service online? Click here to see the page.

• Notify your bank, credit card companies, magazine subscriptions, and other businesses about your move.

• Make a file for papers you'll need during the move, such as school, dental, and medical records; contracts with movers and other service providers; agreements with new utility companies, your new housing information, etc.

6 weeks before moving day:
• Start using up things that you can't move easily, like frozen foods or bleach.

1 month before moving day:
• Set aside the clothes and toiletries you'll need until you're unpacked at your new address.

• Disassemble garden furniture, grills, and sports or pool equipment.

• Close your safe deposit box.

• Give away plants you're not taking.

We at E.E. Ward would like to thank Abby Phillips for 3 years of working at E.E. Ward. In a business where personnel changes is common, Abby is a rock that is such a great asset to the team. So thank you Abby, and may you continue to flourish with all of us at E.E. Ward.

Bio of Abby Phillips:

Abby is one of our two sales representatives here at E.E. Ward Moving & Storage. Chances are, you will meet Abby, or our other rep, Brian, to provide an estimate for your move.

Abby has many interests aside from moving. Abby, along with her husband Paul, loves gardening, going to museums, antique stores, and the theater. Her love for the Jersey Shore comes to no surprise due to her recent transfer from New Jersey. She enjoys the Columbus area, specifically, the gallery hop in the Short North and plans to explore the northern side of the state.

Abby travels all over the Columbus area and many parts of Ohio, providing estimates to moving families. Her favorite aspect of providing estimates is meeting new people and selling a great company and it's services. When asked, 'What is the craziest item a customer had to move?', she responded, "A 16 x 20 foot mirror a customer imported from England. I never saw anything so big in my life!"

Last Day Reflections

Hello dear readers,
     My name is Scott Eisen, and I have been the Marketing/Social Media Intern here since May 15th. Today is my last day here at E.E. Ward, and I can happily say that this has been a great experience for me. The one that I enjoyed the most here is the freedom that I was given to run the social media outlets for this company. I would like to thank both Otto Beatty III and Brian Brooks, co-owners of E.E. Ward North American, for allowing me to control the social media and use my understanding of the platform to positively promote the company. You would think that working for a small company would be boring and there would be little to do, but I found the exact opposite here. Trying to market something that does not have a national reputation takes both creativity and persistence. Again, Mr. Brooks and Mr. Beatty let me experiment with certain marketing techniques and allowed me to grow as a creative marketer.
         The office here can be hectic at times when the phones are like a ringing symphony and a customer's file has been misplaced, but in the end the E.E. Ward team always seems to come through. This is due to the competence and experience of every person on the staff. As much as I am wanting to go back to school, I know I will miss this place and everyone in it. You have all made this a truly great summer and a wonderful experience. My only regret is that I could of worked harder at times and let more people know about the wonderful things happening here. What has truly astonded me about the staff is the care given for each move. No one move is considered more valuable than another and all people and possessions are treated with the upmost respect. This is what makes E.E. Ward a truly special place.
Today, I had E.E. Ward move my stuff back to school in Indiana. It was a weird feeling for me, having something from my present summer moving my possession to my future home, but I guess it was symbolic in a way. It is almost like E.E. Ward prepared me for my future in the work place and it's shepherding me on to the next phase of my life. Just so you all know, the load went smoothly, but that's because it was done by E.E. Ward
        I have done some interesting things this summer for the company, from making a presentation in front of the President of North American Van Lines, to creating an entirly new template for sales reports, to coming into the office at 11 AM on a Saturday right after a soccer game, I have enjoyed every minute spent here. So to Otto, Brian, Lisa, Chris, Mike, Teresa, Abby, Denise, Rich, Dale, and Billy, thank you so much for a wonderful summer and I wish you all good health, good times, and an increase in overall company revenue.

Baby, It;s Warm Outside

Okay, are you back, good. The heat index today has it at get this 112 DEGREES!!!


Sadly, this is what the boys in the warehouse are doing when they come back into the office. Thank goodness for air conditioning.

If you too are having to beat the heat. Do not worry, because E.E. Ward has you covered. We have scowered the internet looking for tips to stay cool today, and here are the best seven we could find:

Close the curtains and blinds in your house, so that the heat from outside will not come to the inside. This can reduce indoor heat as much as 45 percent according to the U.S. department of energy
Have a squirt bottle handy with cold water so you can spray yourself with cool water when you feel extremely hot
Turn off all electronics if you are not using them, because they give off heat
Run a fan in any room you are in even if you are running the air conditioning.
Read a book set in a cold place or set during the wintertime, because reading about the cold can take your mind off of the heat
An oven can raise temperatures in a room by as much as 2 to 5 percent, so if you are cooking tonight, please use the microwave or an outdoor grill to make your house
Do not stay outside without water or something that can help hydrate you

What is in a Name?

When you read the name of a company, do you ever stop to think about why it is called that? Did you know that Verizon got its name from combining the word Veritas, which mean "truth" in Latin, with the word horizon. Makes you kind of wonder, "Okay, so why are you guys E.E. Ward". Well, I could just tell you that it has no meaning and we just wanted you to be confused, but that would not only be a lie, but kind of lazy. So, just who was E.E. Ward and why are we named after him. Well, to tell you that story, we would have to start all the way back in 1881. The world was quite a different place when the company that would become the E.E. Ward you know today first started. America only had 38 states, women could not vote, and no one was mad at Terrell Pryor.

This is what I got when I typed in 1881 on google images. You think this is how people got to work.? You think boosters used to give these to athletes "Under the Table"?

In that same year, William S. Ward, along with his father John T Ward, started a moving a company company known as The Ward Transfer Line. Their only help; a team of horses, some wagons, and two employees. From then on, the company would be a family business for over 100 years, maintaining the hard working values that John and William had tried to instill in all their business endeavors. In 1889, John's son, Edgar Earl Ward, took over the company and renamed it E.E. Ward. The Ward family 120 year controlled ended in 2001, when Brian Brooks and Otto Beatty bought the company from Eldon Ward, the distant kin of John Ward. Though the owners' last name may not be Ward, the current owners carry the same pride for this company just the same as the 5 previous generations of the Ward family did.

Sometimes in the world, you have a leader who despite the hard work you know they are doing, you never get to see their face (I'm looking at you Charlie from Charlie's Angels. Thank you to Lauren Henderson for reminded me of Charlie's absence from the screen). Here at E.E. Ward, we got the privilege of having the General Manager of our Parent Company North American Van Lines, Dan Robertson, come in and visit us on Wednesday. From the moment Dan entered, he was ready to meet everyone in the office with a smile on his face. Everyone was excited to meet him, especially Lisa, one of our great customer service representatives.

I had the chance to talk to Mr. Robertson and to get some answers from a man who has been in the moving business for 4 Decades!

Scott Eisen: Can you tell me about your background and how you became the President of North American Van Lines?

Dan Robertson: When I was going to college in Canada, I worked as a mover for North American Van Lines. From there, I went on to be a sales agent in Canada. Throughout my life, I have worked in this company in sales, operations, management, and logistics. I also worked in several places in the U.S. and worked my up to become the General Manager of North American Van Lines.

Scott: What is different about the industry from when you started?

Dan: How you acquire customers has changed dramatically. It used to be that you would use the yellow pages to find a mover, but now it's all about the Internet and social media to get customers. Also, the demands of the customers have changed since I started 40 years ago, and also the amount of competition today is so much greater.

Scott: What do you think is the future of relocation services in the next 15 years?

Dan: There will be more emphasis on the customers' needs and as their desires change, so will the operations of the company. Also, with the Internet now serving as a hub for business meeting, people will have to relocate less for jobs. Furthermore, the company as a whole will have to become more efficient to stay strong with the changing times.

Scott: What is your biggest professional accomplishment?

Dan: Driving down costs for agents while maintaining our excellent customer service.

Scott: What should people know they begin the process of relocation?

Dan: Do your homework so you know who you have to deal with, take your time to get rid of things you don't need,
and make sure you have solid expectations of the process.

Scott: What would you say to someone entering the relocation business?

Dan: It's a great business for one with an entrepreneurial mind, but it requires hard work. It is never boring.

Scott: Okay, last question. What would you do if you were not in this business?

Dan: I would probably be a doctor

One of the most exciting things about working in this industry is when the hard work and the determination of our employees lead to achieving a goal that will ultimately lead to company growth. It is with the hard work of everyone here at E.E. Ward that we were able to finally receive our government certification for our warehouse. This is a great accomplishment for the entire staff here at E.E. Ward. Now, we can provide quality storage for all government property.

Rich Hanschu, the head of logistics at E.E. Ward, seems to be extra proud of the accomplishment, saying “This validates the drive for quality that has been put into the warehouse. What really makes this that much more special is that it is a third party, even more the government, approving us means that our high quality of standard is being noticed.”

The government certification will do wonders for the business here at E.E. Ward. E.E. Ward Attends NAVL Sponsored Sales

Hello from E.E. Ward Moving & Storage, your favorite Columbus moving company. As a company we keep our staff up to date on new technologies for the moving industry. Recently co-owner Otto Beatty and our sales consultants attended a sales conference in Chicago hosted by North American Van Lines. The sales consultants participated in seminars reviewing different topics such as International Consumer Sales, Using Social Media, and Objection Handling & Closing. I caught up with all three of them to discuss their favorite things about the conference

Abby Phillips, our veteran sales consultant who has been to NAVL sales conferences before, still found herself learning new material. Abby really enjoyed the QLAB class. QLAB is the new system in its trial stage that will be very cutting edge for all users, driver's coordinators and relocation consultants. Abby found this as a great educational experience to hear about different business models and survey techniques. One tip that stuck with her was “keep doing what I'm doing, but do it better".

John Copas described himself as sponge at the conference, soaking up as much information as possible. One class that stood out to him was the Social Media Class. He learned the importance of using the social media outlets for E.E. Ward, and how it could help him personally . Within a week of being back from the conference he had his Linked In page up and running.

This event was also a great way for our Sales team to network and get to know other NAVL agents. Denise O’Leary, a newcomer to the moving industry, met quite few people who were happy to pass on their knowledge of the industry with real life experiences. They even asked her to call them directly if she had any questions or needed help with a move.

The three day sales conference wrapped up on Friday afternoon, just in time for the operations conference to start. Next blog over what Chris King, our operations manager, learned at the operations conference!

E.E. Ward's Day of International Training!

E.E. Ward Moving & Storage, is a Columbus based moving company that specializes in local, long distance, and office relocation. On March 2^nd, Deb Wonson of North American International visited E.E. Ward for an international moving training day. Each staff member learned the techniques for dealing with an international move. Our sales consultants, coordinators and operations team went over customer service skills, sales processes, and operational issues that are involved when dealing with an international move.

E.E. Ward sales consultants were taught how to prepare for a in home survey, and provided a wide variety of marketing resources from North American. Denise O’Leary, an E.E. Ward sales consultant, indicated that her favorite new tool is the Globalcom website. This website allows our sales consultants to go into appointments with confidence and knowledge about the destination country. It also allows agents and customers 24/7 access to comprehensive shipment information so they can track the shipment every step of the way.

E.E. Ward relocation coordinators are a vital part of the relocation process for our customers. Each individual customer is assigned a coordinator who assists them throughout the whole move process. During the training they were educated on the different air and oceanic freight options for shipping out of the United States.

E.E. Wards operational team received training over different issues that may arise during an international move. They reviewed the proper packing and loading procedures for international moving which differ from domestic relocation. Chris King, operations manager, noted that one new fact he learned was that religious items are not allowed to be shipped to certain countries.

Remember Ted Williams? No, not the baseball player. That's right, the
former Columbus panhandler whose "golden voice" was discovered by some
reporters from The Columbus Dispatch. Yeah, remember him? He took the
internet by storm when a video was posted back in January of him showing
off his radio-friendly voice. Since then, he was offered lucrative voice
over deals, stormed morning news shows, was on "Dr. Phil" and then
entered rehab. Talk about a whirlwind 2011.

in a sober house in Los Angeles. While he may continue to do some

down the road.

E.E. Ward, an agent for North American Van Lines, has been selected by the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) to participate in its Center of Excellence program (COE). E.E. Ward, the leading columbus moving company, will be sponsored by a major corporation to be named at a later date.

The COE program is designed to provide a structured environment that aids in minority business development. The COE will be used for defining issues, gathering data on industry best practices, and establishing tools and processes to engage minority businesses to participate in the program. By participating in this program E.E. Ward hopes to enhance their opportunities to become vendor to major corporations by expanding the growth capacity of E.E. Ward’s business.

The structure of the program will be composed of regional groups called “Business Modules”. Within E.E. Ward’s business module there will be an additional 16-20 minority business enterprises, 8-10 corporations, and regional council president. Each module participant has committed to enhancing the supplier diversity process by implementing NMSDC minority supplier development best practices. Each of the “business modules” will last 18-24 months.

E.E. Ward Moving & Storage Staff Members Take Time Off to Volunteer atMap Furniture Bank

Earlier this week E.E. Ward Moving & Storage (Columbus moving company) along with other members of the Relocation Council of Central Ohio, had their staff members volunteer their time to give back to the community. Map Furniture Bank was founded in 1998. They offer free furniture to Central Ohio neighbors that are in need with the hope that one day all Central Ohio families will have properly furnished homes. The Furniture Bank offers many different ways to volunteer, however E.E. Ward members chose to go the physical route, and helped paint and assemble furniture that will be donated to needy families. It was a great hands-on team building experience for the staff, and no experience was required. The furniture bank provided instructions, tools and safety equipment. Winter Storm Moving Into Ohio…Again

For those of us Ohioans who are sick and tired of the snow and just waiting for spring, well, we’re going to have to wait some more. There’s another winter storm headed our way, and it might be a doozy. But before you go calling the Columbus moving company to come pack your things, hold tight, because the storm isn’t expected to last all that long.
The National Weather Service announced that 5 inches of snow is expected to hit Cleveland and the surrounding areas on Friday night. However, the snow and freezing rain will be finished by the end of Friday. Still be cautious driving and wary of the winter storm coming, because as we all learned this winter, it could be worse than expected.

John Copas-

John Copas has lived in Columbus his whole life. He graduated from the local Marion-Franklin High School. He served in the Marines for a four year term after which he began to focus on his professional career. John started out as a direct sales consultant before going to work for the federal government for almost 8 years. When he left the federal government, he started in the moving industry as a mover/driver for another major moving company. In 2009 John joined E.E. Ward Moving & Storage as a crew leader and driver where he received high customer service scores from E.E. Ward customers. Due to his outstanding performance and customer service skills, John was promoted to relocation consultant in January of 2011. John’s favorite thing about the industry is his ability to help people by providing the best customer care possible. In his spare time he coaches high school wrestling and spends time with his wife, three kids and granddaughter.

Denise O’Leary has an extensive background in sales, ranging from automobiles to the communications products. For the past 12 years she has been a stay at home mom raising her four daughters. Upon hearing about the position opening at E.E. Ward Moving & Storage, she felt it was time to get back into the working world. Although she is new to the moving industry, she excited to learn quickly and incorporate her previous sales experience and home management skills. E.E. Ward Moving & Storage has teamed up with EcoRewards Recycling to turn their office “green”. E.E. Ward developed a customized recycling program based on the number of employees, the square footage of the building, and a previous month’s waste invoice. This program included a variety of recycling bins located within the office building as well as a large recycling dumpster located just outside the facility. As well as providing recycling bins for the office, E.E. Ward supplied materials to educate the entire staff on how to use the resources and build a successful recycling program. To push their recycling efforts even further, E.E. Ward picks up moving boxes from its customers and allows new customers to utilize the previously used boxes for their moves. Also, E.E. Ward supplies its customers with plastic crates to greatly reduce the number of cardboard boxes needed.

Since implementing their program in late fall of 2010, E.E. Ward has recycled over 2.6 tons of materials. This translates to a savings of 15500 kilowatt hours of energy or 18580 gallons of water. E.E. Ward will continue to be environmentally aware of their carbon footprint, and strive to make the moving business as green as possible.

Dan Squeglia comes to E.E. Ward with 18 years of experience in the moving industry. He

Top Three Implications to Consider When Hiring Professional Movers

There are a few issues that you need to address when hiring professional movers. Of these, rogue movers are the most important. Rogue Movers are moving companies that will often price your move at one cost (usually at a very cheap price) and significantly raise the cost after the move, holding your valuable goods hostage until you pay their “additional” fees.

The other implications you need to be aware of are: accreditation's, affiliations, cost, insurance, and reputation. One of the easiest ways to figure out if a moving company is reputable is simply by asking questions. Find out if they are part of a moving organization such as the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) or ProMover. Inquire to see if they part of a bigger Van Line service such as northAmerican Van Lines. Finally, and perhaps most important, if the price sounds to good to be true, then it probably is.

Here are the top three things to consider and look for when hiring professional movers:

1) Certifications/Awards

Find out if they are part of the Better Business Bureau, a member of Angie's List, or any type of Award that would recognize and acknowledge their performance.

2) Van Line Affiliation

A Van Line signifies that the moving company you choose is a legitimate business. Van Line companies offer a lot of assistance and tools to moving companies that allow them to easily improve and branch out their services. Today, I had the pleasure of hanging out with two of our staff members, Steve and Lee. They are professional movers by trade, and extremely fun people to hangout with. Eager and energetic, they always show up to the office with a smile and a “ready-to-work” attitude.

So naturally, I had to ask them for an interview.

What do you guys do for fun?

Outside of E.E. Ward, I enjoy throwing darts with friends, a relaxing day of fishing, and just having fun.

Do you guys have any interesting hobbies?

Well I (Lee) collect slot cars and hot wheels.

You guys started working in September. What has been your favorite job that you have completed thus far?

(after talking about it for a minute, they both agreed on the same thing) Our favorite place has to be a mansion we moved in Columbus, Ohio. The place was beautiful! It was huge, elaborately decorated, and really fun to see. The place had big wide doors, breath-taking stairways, and incredible décor in the front yard. The total relocation took six professional movers, and two days.

For those of you who don't know. Columbus holds the annual Bargain Box event held at The Veterans Memorial, by the Junior League of Columbus. This year olds the 61st Anniversary. Bargain Box started in 1949, and has grown in both, scope and size. Support of Bargain Box has enabled the Junior League of Columbus to return over $1.75 million to the community through programs and projects sponsored by the Junior League of Columbus. They sell gently used clothes, furniture, electronics, and loads of other items for the whole family at Bargain Basement prices.

Shout out!
We would like to give a shout out to our new addition Wayne Brown! Wayne has been a professional driver with over 45 years experience. He has a commercial CDL (a professional license made and required for truck drivers), and has worked for prestigeous companies such as Coke and other van lines. We consider him a true veteran of the commercial driving and are proud to have him as part of our team!

Our intern, Chris Olson had the opportunity to interview him and ask him to share some of his stories with us.

Chris) What was an interesting and/or hectic moment you faced on while driving long-distance?
Wayne) Well Chris, that's a tough answer. I have lots of stories for this one. Where do I start? I suppose an interesting one would be the situation involving my truck going up in flames! It all started when an associate of mine had driven over a mattress. Who would have a thought a mattress could cause a fire? Basically, when he drove over the mattress, the springs inside caught in the middle of the truck ripping through some of the wires and causing a short circuit or something, which in turn caused the fire.

Chris) Wow, that's crazy! I never knew drivers faced these kinds of situations! What else has happened?
Wayne) Well, I can tell you that I have driven through all sorts of disastrous situations including: a hurricane, tornados, really thick icy roads, and an earthquake.
Chris) Whoa! That's something right out of "Ice Road Truckers" - What was it like driving through an earthquake?
Wayne) Well, I was at stop, resting, and my I noticed things starting to move. It all happened so fast - there really wasn't much I could do about it. I just waited it out and got back on the road.
Chris) That's dedication!

Monday, August 24th, The Relocation Council of Central Ohio, RCCO, hosted a service meal at the YWCA Family Center. YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. One of the most powerful ways they help the families at the Family Center, is providing them with three full-course meals each day. Every day of the year, volunteers commit to provide and serve these meals. Jessica Wichtman, Community Relations Manager of the YWCA, is dedicated to making these volunteer opportunities possible.

Otto Beatty, Charity Director & Co-Owner of E.E. Ward Moving & Storage Co., and E.E. Ward Intern , Megan Powell, organized volunteers to help serve dinner to the families of the YWCA Family Center. Volunteers from E.E. Ward were Abby Phillips, Sales Specialist; Jesse Blythe, Dispatcher; Graphic Design & Marketing Intern, Chris Olson. Along side these volunteers were board members of the RCCO and many others that successfully served over 140 people.

The Interns' Day Out!

E.E. Ward Moving & Storage has three interns; Megan Powell, Chris Olson, and Gavin Anderson. Each has a respective area of expertise. Megan specializes in marketing; Chris, digital media; and Gavin, logistics. Yesterday, August 12, 2009, Chris and Megan went on a move site to experience the process of moving. They met with three members of E.E. Ward’s finest crew; Rhonda, Marina, and Raleigh. They discovered how E.E. Ward movers handle the packing process, ensuring the safety and security of the home owner’s possessions. Rhonda, the crew driver, gave Megan an impressive demonstration on the proper way to pack expensive glassware. Raleigh showed them how to wrap a couch in order to protect it from any sort of debris. COMMERCIAL SALESPERSON

Job Summary:

E.E. Ward is currently seeking a self-motivated Sales Representative to identify potential customers, solicit and secure commercial moving & installation sales, warehouse and storage opportunities for the Commercial Services Division, primarily through the development of new accounts. Assist in the transition of accounts and transactional business to qualified divisional project manager.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Analyze local market and identify prospective customers
• Perform walk through of potential customer’s facility, gathering all required information to properly format a detailed estimate and/or proposal
• Secure appointments and meet with businesses requiring company’s services
• Create estimate from data collected during walk through or solicited through other means
• Present pricing to customer, including proposal development and accurate portrayal of the services required
• Maintain proper paperwork from initial sales call through transition to project management
• Work closely with move coordinators to ensure customer satisfaction and maximize sales opportunities
• Tend to all service issues, including those that arise outside of normal business hours
• Maintain and create reports to track individual activity and productivity (e.g., closing statistics)
• This position requires a substantial amount of out of office appointments – mostly in the local area
• Develop lists of customers through review of publications, networking with building management companies, real estate firms and other organizations involved in the commercial relocation process
• Secure membership, and participate in organization such as BOMA (Building Owners & Management Association), IFMA (International Facilities Managers Association) and the local Chamber of Commerce
• Prospecting, cold calling, business to business networking, and reporting activity is a job requirement

Skills/Qualifications:

• Must have High School Diploma, some college or trade school preferred
• Solid understanding of the sales process and has passion for sales and business development
• Ability to understand or quickly learn industry, contracts, tariffs, pricing systems/strategies, and current market trends
• Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
• Outstanding written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
• Strong negotiation and closing skills
• Ability and willingness to work outside of normal business hours to maximize sales opportunities and customer demands
• Knowledge of the moving, commercial real estate, and of facilities management industries is preferred, but not required for a candidate with proven success and experience in sales and/or in-home estimating
• Ability to respond to and manage customer resistance and conflict
• Company is participant in the Ohio BWC Drug-Free Workplace program, a drug test and background check will be required as a condition of employment and random drug test occurs during tenure of employment

Warehouse Manager will be expected to perform at a level necessary to meet and exceed customer expectation and satisfaction for private transfer and corporate relocation services. This goal will be achieved through managing/leading the daily functions and productivity requirements of the warehouse at E.E. Ward Moving & Storage.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Implement, manage, and enforce warehouse operating standards
• Manage and maintain accurate storage, new product and equipment inventory
• Manage the daily equipment and material needs for local operations personnel
• Maintain and enforce safety standards for warehouse and out-bound activity
• Maintain a quality assurance program, expected level of warehouse performance
• Communicate with in-bound goods vendors and manage on-going relationship
• Enforce company policies of equipment appearance and condition
• Conduct inventory audits
• Assist with dispatch/release of local move services and outbound product
• Assist with upkeep of motorized equipment to ensure compliance with DOT
• Maintain a low loss prevention rating

• Solid computer skills (Internet, Excel, and Word) and good data entry skills required
• Must be team-oriented with flexible talent and a focus on operational efficiency
• Must possess excellent social skills and organization skills and ability to work with diverse personalities

What do you guys do for fun?

Outside of E.E. Ward, I enjoy throwing darts with friends, a relaxing day of fishing, and just having fun.

Do you guys have any interesting hobbies?

Well I (Lee) collect slot cars and hot wheels.

You guys started working in September. What has been your favorite job that you have completed thus far?

(after talking about it for a minute, they both agreed on the same thing) Our favorite place has to be a mansion we moved in Columbus, Ohio. The place was beautiful! It was huge, elaborately decorated, and really fun to see. The place had big wide doors, breath-taking stairways, and incredible décor in the front yard. The total relocation took six professional movers, and two days.

Bargain Box Part 2

I hope everyone who attended the Bargain Box event had a great time. Our Long Distance Coordinator, Shannon Hazlett, said she had a great time. She explained that the Bargain Box had a huge selection of items to choose from. Accompanied by her daughter and a friend, they purchased several pairs of jeans, roller skates, and a karaoke machine.

The consensus was very much the same across the board, many of our staff members who attended the event found great stuff to take home with them. Since each year gets better, I can only imagine what next year will be like!

The president of the organization let me film her explaining some information about the event, and thanking us for our services. Unfortunately, due to some tech issues I wasn't able to load the video on the day of the event. However, this is still a great video to share.

If you didn't catch the Bargain Box this year, I'd definitely recommend planning to attend next year.

Brian Weaver recently joined E.E. Ward Moving & Storage has the Director of Sales and Quality. As a 34 veteran in the moving industry, Brian has worked for several major van lines. He has held executive positions in management, operations, and sales. It comes to no surprise that he's moved thousands of families as well as CEO's, corporate executives, university presidents, and even the famous!

Little did he know that what started out as a part time job during his school and college years turned into a lifelong career of providing exceptional corporate and residential relocation services.

Brian has been happily married to his wife Barb for 36 years. After raising 4 children, they are raising 2 of their 4 grandchildren. This keeps Brian active and young at heart. His hobbies include watching Buckeye sports, biking, fishing, camping, gardening, coaching baseball, playing the guitar, and giving back to the community.

Whether it's driving the eldertly to Church, working at a food bank, helping the Boy Scouts, or donating blood to the Red Cross, Brian brings insight, commitment and a sense of humor to everything he does.
